Heathcote specialist Peter Dredge has worked alongside Hoddle Creek Estate's Franco d'Anna and McLaren Vale's eminent Ben Riggs at nearby Sanguine Estate. Planted in 1971 to ancient Cambrian soils, the unirrigated single parcel of mature vines at Red Edge yields a scant one to 1½ tons of fruit per acre. A multi layered, rich and powerful palate, yet elegant with fine grained tannins, splendid structure and superior length. An exciting cépage which may vary slightly from year to year, mostly a Shiraz wine sourced off younger Heathcote plantings, a tenth of Mourverdre and small percentage of Riesling. Mourverdre contributes plummy fruit to the nose, juciness and flesh to the palate. Riesling adds an aromatic lift within a slightly spiced floral perfume. An engagingly aromatic, satisfyingly proportioned and generously flavoured wine, to match with rare breast of duck dressed in rhubarb or charred scotch filet under mushroom jus.

Rahona Valley wines are all produced from a single four acre property within a small valley at Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. The growing conditions are excellent, deep, well drained red basalt soils nurture the vines, as the cool maritime climes lead to a long, slow ripening period. Oak barrels impart a very important part of the flavour profile, one of the most significant costs each year. The annual visit of the cooper, a few months before harvest, is one of those pivotal occasions that go a long way to setting the style of wine each and every vintage.

Parcels from the eminent Pierrepoint vineyard at Henty adds another dimension. Melbourne entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine commissioned industry maestro Colin Preece in 1967 to find the best Victorian sites for making great wine. Preece chose an old grazing property in the Nagambie district of central Victoria for its climate, soil and proximity to waterways. Preece Shiraz is still vinified at the renowned Mitchelton wineworks, sourcing the best fruit from a diversity of vineyards to create a rich complex wine with expressions of spiced plum and juicy blackberries, supported by fine tannins and a measure of elegant vanilla oak.

A long family association with neighbouring pastoralists saw the acquisition of Tintagel farm along Portsea Ocean Beach in 1956, a place of undulating paddocks and sweeping views over tempestuous Bass Strait. Immediately recognizable as Portsea Estate, its inviting bouquet of mixed berry fruits, rose petals and forest floor, are all underpinned by luxurious earthy minerality, elegantly balanced by perfectly attenuated acidity and finely grained tannins over polished French oak.

Port Phillip Vineyard is quite small at only nine hectares, there are however unique microclimes within the property which make a rather articulate wine. During the harvest of a finer, warmer growing season, the team may set aside fruit fom a half hectare block of older vines, for a limited edition Shiraz of added richness, elocution and depth. Serenne makes a wine of dulcetly aromatic, black plum and mulberry flavours, a measure of vegemite savouryness and the piquancy of spiced game, the tannins are conspicuously tranquil, secure yet serene.
